Annihilation

A series of Soundscapes/sound design compositions inspired by the novel Annihilation by Jeff Vandermeer

In order to challenge myself as a sound designer I decided to undertake a project to create dynamic and engaging sound design without relying on visuals to make an immersive atmosphere or retain the audience’s attention.

I chose to make pieces inspired by the themes\locations Annihilation - one of my favourite books, because of the unique atmosphere the book creates. You may recognise the story from the film adaptation of Annihilation released in 2018, although my project also features a location that was not featured in the film.

Highlights

Area X

A group of scientists set out on an exbedition to explore a remote coastal area that has been abandoned for decades, known for its bizarre and unpredictable nature. They hope to observe and study its unusual biological and psychological phenomena. All previous exhibitions have ended in failure and tragedy.

The Tower

After entering Area X, the scientists encounter a structure described as a grey stone flat disk embedded in the ground with a rectangular opening that leads to a spiral staircase heading underground. When the scientists start to descend down the staircase, they discover a strange message written on the walls using a moss or fungus-like organism. Upon approaching the words, they are disturbed, releasing golden spores. The strange message continues on the walls of the tower, as one of the scientists continues down the seemingly endless stairs.

The Crawler

Continuing to follow the writing on the walls further underground, the scientist eventually encounters the author of the message - a shapeshifting crawling snail-like creature that produces blinding light and shattering sound. The scientist is investigated by the creature and is seemingly found satisfactory, as they are allowed to continue past the crawling, slithering creature.

The Lighthouse

Having escaped the tower, the scientist continues on to the very edge of Area X, where a lighthouse stands on the coastline. The ocean is black and vast and the scientist senses that there are threats contained within. With no chance of escaping Area X, the scientist continues to follow the coastline in the hope of finding answers.
